"Oratio Dominicae " (Pater noster)

The Lord's Prayer (Our Father)

Pater noster qui es in coelis,
sanctificetur nomen tuum;
adveniat regnum tuum,
fiat voluntas tua,
sicut in coelo et in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie,
et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.
et ne nos inducas in tentationem
sed libera nos a malo.
Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day, our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Thought long and hard about whether or not to translate this in English but felt I shouldn't discriminate against the non Catholics who didn't grow up in the era of the Latin mass... LOL

I was so touched my Jane's comment on Facebook
"I am absolutely overwhelmed by your mastery of Latin! I had no idea we had such a scholar amongst us!!!"
that I felt prompted to try and impress you even more....

Memories ...the melodic droning of the Latin gobbeldey goop drowning out my fathers muffled snores from the back of the church [in Maldon] ...or did he not fall asleep in mass way back then [1950's]... I really need my siblings to bail me out here...

I do vividly remember the midnight mass in Deniliquin...I used to be so embarrassed that I would encourage Al to sit upstairs so that when the buzz saw started [he was well past gentle snores by this age!!] people may not know who it was... What a hoot...his snore was quite distinctive....I'm quite sure all the church going Catholics knew!! [they certainly also knew how often we DIDN'T go - mighty quiet today folks!!!]

Not that I can talk about etiquette in church...in particular funerals...but that is a story for another day...

In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti.
Amen

" Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur"

(Anything said in Latin sounds profound.)

...now isn't this the truth!!

No, there is no relation to this little anecdote..

Last night I saw an interview with Gary McDonald. For years people have been telling me how much Pete looks like him...yep...had worked that one out for myself and we are all in agreement..don't know about Pete... Interestingly enough they had some footage of Gary when he was a young chap with hair.
[I never knew Pete when he had hair]
Anyway, back off that tangent...its not just the lack of hair and the laconic wit which draws me to make comparisons...the resemblance was remarkable in their younger days.

That isn't where the story ends... Pete's life now mirrors one of Gary's most delightful roles in the most amazing fashion...Arthur.... we have our own 'Mother & Son' comedy being played out in Brunswick.
Thankfully Lucy isn't suffering from dementia...yet............

Pete went to bed early'ish [yep..I am back into 'ishes']...and was woken by Lucy calling out...SHOUTING...from the front room...

IN HIS WORDS: SMS Received 12/5/09 00:00

"Peter!.....Peter!..."

Came the screams from mum's bedroom in the middle of the night. I got out bed, pulled on some shorts and staggered down the passageway half expecting to find her on the floor, unable to get up [her light was on].
I turned into her room.

There she was....lying there.....
"where's me cup of tea?"
When I got home at about 7.45 I told her I'd make her a cuppa to have in bed.
"You've already had it", I said at about twenty to eleven.
She looked around puzzled, and I said,
"I've already taken the cup out to the kitchen"
.

AND washed it I might add.
[no more than I would have expected from you P]
She laughed, I sighed;
I've got an early start tomorrow.
Thought you'd get a giggle out of this.

love P

LOL...I certainly did get a giggle out of this. Thank you so much for thinking of me and sharing this with me. It brought forth the most wonderful images of Maggie Bear and poor long suffering Arthur ...I'm sorry...but the comparison is too much for me. Oh dear...he he. I promise I will get onto trying to find some respite care for your mum ASAP while you can still laugh about it!

Sparks a few memories of mum and her 'wanders' when she was in a delusional state...oh dear...sherry parties in the middle of the night...or should I say the early morning! Was I REALLY trying to get her drunk so she would sleep and then I would / could get some sleep?? We certainly had a few laughs!!

"Sona si Latine loqueris"
[now THAT you have to work out for yourself...you need a little active participation in this learning Latin caper]
... until the next time...ciao....

"Malum consilium quod mutari non potest....."

[It's a bad plan that can't be changed.]

Where have the last 10 days gone.....
I am back by popular demand...gotta say I love my followers & fan club ...

This is going to be my motto to plan for Vici's big adventure downunder...it is all to do with flexibility...nothing at all with me being unable to make up my mind.... I kid you not...
I have started the deluge of links that she needs to peruse to help me with my planning... Those that know me well know about my passion for the earth, nature and in particular 'rocks'...yep, I know...they're in my head as well....

As it happens, SURPRISE, SURPRISE.... Vici shares my love of boulders and is suitably impressed by the first link that I have sent her...the Grampians. It has always been one of my most favourite places on earth. First went there when I was about 18 and I honestly have no idea how many times I have been drawn back to the embrace of those wonderful rocky outcrops. Peace and tranquility. Birds, waterfalls, wombats and koalas. Forest, ferns and our beautiful native flora ....and hopefully quite a lot of wildflowers at that time of the year! Now I wonder where my book is on the flora of that area...

From there we will amble down to Warrnambool and slowly wind our way along the Great Ocean Road back to town. I wonder if Vici has ever seen a whale in the wild ...I haven't. Maybe we can do some whale watching while we are there....I suspect at that time of the year that the whales will have finished calving and the pod will be/have moved on. Fingers crossed!
"Logan's beach offers the best whale observation point in southern Australia. It is often referred to as a natural nursery, as Southern Right whales return to its sheltered waters to give birth to their young each winter." [RACV Travel]

Next job is researching some accommodation along the coast...what fun!
Something else I've been wanting to do for ages is to take the Blues Train...what a fun activity this would be after our big adventure....[check out the 7th November Vici]

Halloween...

"Big Halloween party happening down here....being orchestrated by an international expert...coming especially to show us how it is done in the States"....
I'm just trying to decide whether to post this on Facebook....

"nonne amicus certus in re incerta cernitur?"

(a friend in need is a friend in deed (our equivalent))
Well wasn't the truth 28 years ago today.... I am a tad more relaxed today! Memories of the day...there are a few that a jostling to be top of the list....
...Pete asking ME where I put the rings....rings? what rings?
...losing it immediately...how do you get married without rings? Why would anyone want to show me the engraving on the rings when all I can think about is the catering arrangements for the reception. Must have been completely half-baked back then...who in their right mind would decide to cater for their own wedding? [particularly after such a lengthy engagement...8 weeks?]

...photographic evidence exists of the next memory...sitting, red eyed, in mum's back yard with an almost empty bottle of beer in front of me [no other glasses]
...then being incapable of doing my own makeup...Claire earnt her keep as chief [one and only] bridesmaid that day. Hence the title for today...she has been there for me though the highest and the lowest points of my life. All the way for the last ...gee...how long....I almost need a calculator to work this one out!! Have we really known each other for 33 years give or take a month here and there...I was 21 when we met so I SUPPOSE it is getting closer to 34 years...we have shared a few birthdays since then. Remember the year we tried to gain admission to a gay bar in Swanston St? They were happy to let Dave and Duke in but not us...

My birthday has always been a special day that I have spent with family and friends. Today has been no different. Tracey and I had a lovely afternoon at the Canterbury Art Show. She bought me coffee and lunch before detouring to her place [for a glass of quite delectable white wine from the Marlborough Sound] before dropping me at home...

I am now sitting here sipping white wine listening to my birthday present...a DVD of LEONARD COHEN LIVE IN LONDON. It is the same concert that we went to her at Rod Laver...absolutely wonderful. He is just so wonderful. He looks wonderful on the big screen. Poor Pete...he will just have to put up with me singing this time...I restrained myself at the concert but I don't have to here...

WOW...Lachie has just hung all the washing out...what a wonderful birthday present. I am very spoilt! [and rightly so...LOL]

and now I am out of here.....Die dulci fruere.... Ciao...♥♥

"Verba volant, scripta manent."

(Spoken words fly away, written words remain.)

My thought for the day...."Verba volant, scripta manent."
This I certainly need to remember in such a public place as the web!!

"Propino tibi salutem!" (Cheers!)

'Vir sapit qui pauca loquitur'

It is a wise man who speaks little.
How sad...I chatter far too much when I'm excited [as I am now] and so I doubt that I will ever be considered wise... I hope you appreciate that by following my blog you can learn Latin at the same time....

WOW..1st May...'B' day tomorrow ...hehe
Already the cards are rolling in and today I received a wonderful gift from California...thank you Panda...tis beautiful. My very own little Scrabble tile - a 'B' for Bean... I am so lucky to have a friend like you. And now I am outta here...lots to do before my birthday tomorrow.

Die dulci fruere.
